23.07.2021

Zurich-based VAY makes computers understand human motion using just a regular camera. The ETH spin-off combines the power of artificial intelligence with human expertise to develop a hardware-agnostic technology that works in real time. Professional feedback complements the visual analysis to help users improve movement quality, turning connected fitness products into complete virtual personal coaches for a truly interactive and immersive experience. The technology, offered in a B2B licensing model, has attracted interest from renowned players in fitness and the therapeutics and rehabilitation space. VAY will use the CHF 150,000 to strengthen its position as the leading provider of camera-based motion analysis.

Computer vision is still fairly new, and many businesses struggle to successfully develop and implement the technology into their products and services. The in-house development of the core technology is cumbersome and comes with high maintenance costs to ensure the technology stays up to date.

VAY develops a novel way to teach a computer to understand human motion and movements. The startup’s computer vision software effortlessly digitizes human movements to provide users with high personalization, real-time feedback, and professional guidance. VAY’s hardware-agnostic Human Pose Estimation algorithms work with any camera and create a computer model of the human body in real time.

The ETH spin-off aims to democratize professional human motion analysis through readily available consumer devices. By making lab-grade human motion analysis accessible to everybody, VAY enables novel prevention, diagnosis, and treatment methods for musculoskeletal conditions and increases physical health and longevity. The startup provides business clients in the fitness and health sectors with the most extensive and highest quality movement library with interfaces that can be used in a plug-and-play manner.

VAY was founded by Joel Roos (CEO), Ben Simon (COO), and Patrizio Bonzani (CTO) in 2019. The startup is a Venture Leader Mobile 2021. In connected fitness, VAY is considered the leading provider of camera-based motion analysis. In the competitive market, the upcoming 18 months will be decisive, and VAY plans to make good on the head start and capture the space while meeting the demand from the therapeutics space. With renowned partners from research and industry, VAY intends to expand its motion analysis capabilities into a medical product. The CHF 150,000 from Venture Kick will benefit these plans as part of a larger Seed round.

“The Venture Kick program has helped us sharpen our product offering and establish the optimal go-to-market with a business model that is now proven to work well with many different clients. Discussions with the VK team and with many of the other amazing startups in the program always shone new light onto things from a different perspective,” said VAY CEO Joel Roos.
