The first kicks of 2018!

15.01.2018

Congratulations to the first four winners of the CHF 10,000 prize for 2018: RiskTalk, ABCDx, REM Analytics and UniSieve in fields as diverse as in-vitro diagnostics (Medtech), microtype profiling (Biotech), anonymous reporting systems (Software) and cleaning up petrochemical separation (Cleantech).

ABCDx (University of Geneva) Medtech
ABCDx provides powerful new in vitro diagnostics (IVD) tools for transforming the triage, diagnosis and treatment decision process at the point of care for patients presenting with potential brain injury, ranging from stroke and trauma to complications.By developing a tool that searches for certain biomarkers (chemical reactions in the brain), this enables a clinician to understand what is happening within a patient and thus administer the correct treatment quickly, reducing the risk of long term damage.
REM Analytics, (EPFL) Biotech
The human microbiome is the complex ecology of bacteria living around and inside us, mostly in the gut. Every individual has a specific microbiome: their “microtype,” which is susceptible to modifications and imbalances. REM Analytics, proposes new technique to accurately profile the microtype of individuals. As a research service to probiotic companies, they will provide accurate measurement of the specific effect a probiotic is having on its consumers.  This will allow the probiotic industry to better demonstrate the therapeutic purpose of their products, thereby boosting their sales and increasing their margins. They will use their measurements to develop the worlds first large, high quality microbiome data, with the potential to change the way in which we view health, nutrition and treatment.

RiskTalk (UNIL/HEC) Enterprise Software, SaaS, IT, Risk Management
RiskTalk empowers any employee to report anything, directly to their organisation's leadership, completely anonymously, via a simple app. In a ‘back office’, risk controllers will see issues flagged and sorted by organizational priorities – which then directs attention and follow-up action, with the back office team remaining in contact with the reporter. The reporter’s identity remains a secret, particularly when the software strips out identifying data from any supporting files that may be submitted.

UniSieve (ETH Zurich) Cleantech, Petrochemical Industry
Over 10% of total energy consumption worldwide is due to separation processes. To target this issue, UniSieve has developed a patent-pending membrane technology, which allows cost-and energy-efficient separation of gases. The technology is based on an inventive way of integrating metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into polymeric membranes. The UniSieve technology has the potential to create various separation solutions for small-scale home applications (B2C), and also large-scale industrial processes (B2B). Currently, the focus is set on building modules for the purification of hydrogen (energy, cleantech industry) and propylene (oil&gas, chemical industry).
