Technology company routeRank providing IT solutions for travel and mobility gets acquired by Netcetera

08.07.2022

As part of the strategic merger, the two companies will provide IT solutions for multimodal mobility worldwide. Technology company routeRANK created in 2006 provides multimodal mobility portals as an IT service. Unlike other solutions, they address the entire door-to-door route by integrating all relevant modes of transport and their many multimodal combinations. In 2007, routeRank won Venture Kick, participated in Venture Leaders Technology, and was selected for the TOP 100 Swiss Startups Awards in 2011 and 2012. We interviewed CEO Jochen Mundinger about his entrepreneurial path and challenges.

Through fully controlled subsidiaries, Netcetera offers its customers IT services and digital products. This includes the development and implementation of individualized software specified for the needs of its customers (bespoke software). Customers are from the financial and transport industries as well as from the media and health sectors. With the acquisition of routeRANK, Netcetera strengthens its transport offering.

Jochen Mundinger, who remains Chairman and CEO of routeRANK, says: “I am excited about the opportunity that the acquisition will provide to grow further. There is a strong complementarity between the technical backgrounds of the two companies as well as strong compatibility in terms of company culture. We’ll benefit from Netcetera’s existing structure, resources, and channels. This will also allow us to better support our customer base.”

Oliver Aeschlimann, Head of Product & Market Strategy Digital Enterprise says: “With this strategic expansion of our portfolio in the field of smart mobility, we are able to provide our customers with new and comprehensive solutions. Between multimodal route planning from door to door, the provision of travel information, and ticketing, we can cover the whole range of mobility services. The flexibility, speed, and precision of routeRANK’s platform enable us to expand our offering for transport companies as well as for our customers’ corporate mobility based on their needs, such as minimizing CO2 emissions.”

“We have been impressed with routeRANK’s achievements, and we are pleased that the routeRANK team is becoming part of Netcetera Group”, says Gabriele Brechbühl, Managing Director Digital Enterprise at Netcetera. “The new location in Lausanne also gives us access to IT talent in western Switzerland. We are happy to be an employer in the French-speaking part of Switzerland and to be able to offer a great place to work.”

In 2007, routeRank won Venture Kick, participated in Venture Leaders Technology, and was selected for the TOP 100 Swiss Startups Awards in 2011 and 2012.

We interviewed CEO Jochen Mundinger about his entrepreneurial path and challenges.

Jochen, how will the acquisition by Netcetera help achieve your vision?
It will help us in growing further and in doing so faster. Netcetera already has in place structures, resources, and channels that we would have had to put in place. The two companies are complementary in terms of technical background there is a fit in terms of company culture. This will also allow us to better support our customer base and increase our impact on making mobility more sustainable.

You won Venture Kick in 2007. How did it help you lay the foundation for your growth and today's achievement?
Venture Kick was an important early milestone. It helped with the financing, directly through the grant and indirectly by encouraging additional investors, as well as by providing additional credibility and visibility in general.

You also participated in Venture Leaders in 2007  and were selected for the TOP 100 Swiss Startups Awards in 2011 and 2012. How did it leverage your fundraising strategy?
Venture Leaders helped with learning more about financing and other start-up topics. I also met a number of relevant people through it, in Switzerland and abroad.

When, and what, was your inspiration to found routeRank?
In 2006 I was planning a conference trip. Once too often it simply took me too much time to piece it all together. As a mathematician, I saw the underlying problem of multimodal route planning, according to different priorities like price, travel time, and CO2 emissions, and it was clear to me that I wanted to build a solution for this.

What is your advice for the potential software entrepreneurs launching companies in Switzerland today?
Just do it.
