SurgeonsLab wins CHF 150,000 to make surgeries and clinical interventions safer

21.01.2021

SurgeonsLab develops and produces realistic, patient-specific models and simulations for training microsurgical procedures and endovascular interventions and validating new medical devices. By using medical image data of real patients, the Bern-based medtech startup creates 3D simulations models of a patient’s head anatomy with all required micro-anatomies, including functional and physiological properties. Neurosurgeons use these models in a 4D simulator to train microsurgery and achieve accurate results in the operating rooms. SurgeonsLab will use the CHF 150,000 to scale up the production of 4D simulators and ramp up early market entry overseas.

SurgeonsLab’s patient-specific and realistic micro-physiological phantom devices are a novel solution for the medical industry. By using additive manufacturing techniques, the medtech startup can manufacture neuro blood vessels with functional and physiological properties in less than 48 hours after receiving the patient’s CT data. The 3D models allow neurosurgeons to replicate the clinical workflow in an operation room and practice the procedures under realistic conditions.

Compared to existing training manikins and animal models, SurgeonsLab provides the only solution that achieves the accuracy and detail required to train microsurgery and catheter-based micro-interventions. In 2019, neurosurgeons at Inselspital Bern tested the startup’s minimal viable prototype and validated the feasibility of using the simulator for clinical applications. SurgeonsLab is planning for a product launch event in July 2021 at SITEM Insel, Bern, which will include training for specialists and expert neurosurgeons from medical centers in Europe. The startup has already received several pre-orders from major industry leaders and renowned surgery centers such as Inselspital Bern and Harvard Medical School in the US.

SurgeonsLab was founded in 2021 by Fredrick Johnson Joseph (right), who is pursuing a PhD at ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research in Bern, and Dr. med. David Bervini (left), a staff neurosurgeon at Inselspital in Bern. The SurgeonsLab team will use the CHF 150,000 to scale up the production of 4D simulators and ramp up early market entry overseas by the end of 2021. “Venture Kick is at the top in the success book of SurgeonsLab and for me personally to become a successful entrepreneur from academics to CEO. In simple terms, SurgeonsLab, as a company, would not exist without the Venture Kick process. The training and support from the Venture Kick team helped us achieve our goals in the company for the last 10 months, and we are happy to continue working with them in the future,” Fredrick Johnson Joseph, founder and CEO of SurgeonsLab.
