Scewo raises another CHF 3 million to advance expansion

Medtech Scewo has raised fresh capital to expand its distribution network in Germany. The stair-climbing wheelchair BRO is available in the second series with some innovations. Scewo was a Venture Kick winner in 2017 and one of the TOP 100 Swiss Startups in 2019 and 2021.

Last fall, the appearance on the TV show Höhle der Löwen Deutschland helped ETH spinoff Scewo gain a lot of notoriety. Although no deal was struck with investors from the show, three strategic investors from the DACH region took a stake in the medtech startup. This investment added another CHF 3 million to the CHF 8.5 million raised last fall.

Scewo is using the fresh capital primarily for further market development in Germany. The medtech has already established a subsidiary there. “Now, we are building up the distribution network and investing in marketing,” said Scewo communications manager Natalie Rotschi. The first distribution partners are already under contract. In addition to providing advice, these partners will also take care of the financing application with health insurance companies and the wheelchair service in Germany.

The redesigned BRO is produced in a second series and comes with optimized hardware and a new battery. The wheelchair can now also be used as a passenger seat in a car. The production facility in Stein am Rhein was further expanded. Scewo is also expanding the team to ensure that, in addition to production, the training of new sales partners is guaranteed.

In addition to growing market activities in Germany, the spinoff is evaluating other European countries for the next expansion steps. “The launch in additional countries is planned for this year,” said Rotschi. So, in addition to the 40 BROs currently in use, a few more people in wheelchairs will probably soon be facing the stairs as a surmountable obstacle.
