Qloudlab and 3db Access win 130’000 CHF each

04.11.2013

Qloudlab from EPF Lausanne and 3db Access from ETH Zurich won the final kick from 130’000 CHF in an exciting final. Qloudlab develops touchscreen technology embedded in Smartphone as a universal Point-of-Care for diagnostics tests. 3db Access provides solutions to the problem of securing applications and systems relying on proximity verification.

Qloudlab from Lausanne turns an ordinary smartphone (iPhone, Galaxy S, Lumia etc.) into a medical device for multiple blood diagnostics testing:  Arthur Queval, Simon Chaplin and Maxime Ettori are developing a disposable biofilm which enables the smartphone touchscreen to test your blood. The team is now working on a prototype for pilot-series testing in 2014 and plans to launch the home test for blood coagulation in 2016.
The diagnostic procedure is quick, inexpensive and user-friendly: a disposable biofilm is placed on the smartphone touchscreen, a sample of blood is inserted in the biofilm and the diagnostic result is displayed directly on the touchscreen. These results can immediately be integrated into healthcare data networks through the cloud. Patients can test their blood coagulation easily at home with no need to visit a doctor or buy an expensive device. And as CEO Arthur Queval says, venture kick was a great opportunity to develop and sharpen their business approach. Queval continues: “We are really proud to have been through all the venture kick process and this label is also a huge recognition thanks to a jury composed of recognized experts and entrepreneurs in their respective fields. Thanks to this final kick of 100’000CHF we will be able to accelerate our growth and prepare our market launch!”

With proximity verification against car theft
Your new car is probably equipped with a keyless access. These existing systems are userfriendly but not safe enough. The ETH-Scientists Boris Danev, Chiara Martelli and David Barras (CSEM)  developed with their Startup 3db Access in cooperation with CSEM, the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology, a safe keyless access system relying on proximity verification. The system determines how close two wireless devices are located from each other in terms of physical distance. The small (2-3 milimeters) chips in the car and the users “key” send pulses with minimal delay and carry cryptographically secure messages with the speed of light.  Smallest distractions are immediately recognized, what makes the system extremely secure. CEO Boris Danev:„Winning venture kick is for 3db the highest recognition for its work and continuous efforts to become the next generation keyless access technology. The price gives us a strong kick to further increase our business activities in all markets where keyless access must be both convenient and secure.”3db's novel technology is currently used by several systems to provide access to vehicles and in the future, the system should be adopted to buildings and mobile payments.
