BoxUp: smart lockers for sports equipment
HES-SO Valais-Wallis alums Frank Rouillier, Florian Voumard and Lucien Manueddu developed BoxUp during their masters in product development, using the design thinking method. It’s a smart locker and app that lets users rent sports and leisure equipment directly at green, outdoor spaces. The leisure, sport or relaxation equipment varies depending on the location of the boxes. Boxup helps people have fun and exercise at sports and leisure facilities, without having to buy, store and transport equipment – so there’re able to discover new activities and places to practise them easily.

Gennady Nikitin: metabolic anti-cancer drug screening platform
Gennady Nikitin developed a novel fluorescent mitochondrial pH probe to identify the metabolic profiles of various cancers. These phenotypes can then be used to screen metabolism-targeting anti-cancer drugs, to discover which will be most effective against each type of cancer. Finding metabolic profiles that are unique to cancerous cells, and absent in healthy cells, will be of special interest.

GenKnowme: Swiss epigenetic testing for lifestyle and environmental factors and quantify their impact
Lausanne University Hospital’s Semira Gonseth and Sébastien Nusslé developed their business idea during postdoctoral work at UC San Francisco and UC Berkeley, where they investigated the epigenetic links between cancer and lifestyle risk factors. GenKnowme aims to be Switzerland’s first startup to offer epigenetic testing to quantify how patients’ lifestyles and environments impact their health. The tests’ actionable answers will let patients make healthy choices.
