Perovskia wins CHF 150,000 to target a solar cell on every device

29.07.2021

Perovskia aims to develop the world’s most versatile and high-performance clean energy solution for devices: The startup specializes in digitally printed solar cells for consumer electronics and IoT devices, designing custom cells around end-use products. The perovskite semiconductor employed in Perovskia solar cells is the best light-converting material to date, and it allows solar cells to be integrated into a range of electronic devices and operate even in low-light conditions like homes and offices. Perovskia will use the CHF 150,000 to kick-start operations.

Perovskia operates at the intersection of printed electronics, photovoltaics, and material science. The combines top-end aesthetics with best-in-class energy conversion at disruptive costs to provide the world’s most versatile and high-performance clean energy solution for devices.

The Perovskia technology enables complete freedom to design solar cells: The startup offers a unique digital printing technology (patent process ongoing) to fabricate solar cells in customized shapes and sizes to perfectly integrate into electronic devices, IoT, and sensors. The cost-efficient production process creates solar cells that are able to perform more than three times better than silicon-based solar cells—even in low-light conditions. The startup’s custom design capability can produce solar cells of any shape and size: from several microns to several square centimeters.

Perovskia was founded by Anand Verma (CEO) and Dr. Toby Meyer (CTO) in 2020. The startup relies on the outcome of years of interdisciplinary research by the founder-CEO at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (ETH Domain, empa.ch), funded by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, and it is incubated with the help of the industrial experience of Solaronix, a pioneer in next-generation photovoltaics. Perovskia is a Venture Leader Mobile 2021.

The worldwide thin-film photovoltaic market is estimated at more than USD 6 billion and continues to grow. “The exploding market for electronic devices points to a large opportunity for clean energy solutions to complement traditional batteries,” said Anand Verma, founder and CEO of Perovskia. “Our vision is to enable a custom-designed solar cell on every device, thereby making them energy self-sufficient. We are thrilled to be supported by Venture Kick, one of Switzerland’s most prestigious programs for entrepreneurs.”

The company plans to use the funds from Venture Kick to fast-track job creation, accelerate customer acquisition, and ramp up production. “Beyond financial support, we have benefited tremendously from our engagement in the Venture Kick program,” concluded Verma. “The coaching and networks available to us will be invaluable as we onboard our early adopter clients and investors to launch Perovskia this year.
