The Fribourg-based deep-tech startup Impossible Materials has announced the successful acquisition of a CHF 2 Million grant from Innosuisse's Startup Innovation Project program, representing a significant accomplishment in its mission to revolutionize industries with sustainable cellulose white pigments.

Having previously raised an oversubscribed seed funding round earlier in 2023, Impossible Materials utilized the funds to establish its initial pilot facility in Switzerland. The newly acquired grant will facilitate an expansion in production capacity, accelerating the market entry of their flagship product, a cellulose white pigment. The comprehensive project budget now stands at almost CHF 3 Million.

Impossible Materials is committed to transforming cellulose into functional ingredients that offer safe and sustainable colour and texture solutions across various industries. This latest funding injection, which CEO Lukas Schertel describes as "non-dilutive and instrumental," is expected to push the company to new heights, allowing it to scale operations and significantly increase the likelihood of a successful market entry.

With a focus on engineering high-value plant-based formulations, Impossible Materials aims to play a leading role in promoting environmentally friendly alternatives. The new funds will expedite their mission to introduce cellulose-based formulation ingredients to fast consumer goods and industrial markets, driving positive impacts on both the environment and society.

In 2023, Impossible Materials was ranked among the TOP 100 Swiss Startups and won the third stage of the Venture Kick program.

"In the early stage of our company, the Venture Kick program provided critical feedback for improving our business focus, funding to grow into our own operations and a network that exposed us to key stakeholders for the current success and growth," said Impossible Materials CEO Lukas Schertel.
