Four new kickers join Venture Kick

07.11.2018

Every stage 1 of Venture Kick brings a new batch of fresh and promising high-tech ideas to keep a close eye on. This session welcomes FenX (Cleantech), Hemolytics (Medtech), Kimata Networks (IT, mobile app) and Sevensense Robotics (IT, robotics). Each of the projects were rewarded with CHF 10,000.

FenX (ETH Zürich) – Cleantech
The mission of FenX is to provide innovative and high impact solutions which involve transversally the society, improve the current safety standards and challenge the current market offer with high-tech and cost-efficient insulating materials. After the fire catastrophe of the London Grenfell tower in 2017, there is an increasing demand for non-flammable insulating materials supported by recent regulations on thermal insulators. Moreover, the growing debate over the high CO2 footprint associated to traditional thermal insulators fosters novel eco-friendly solutions. To address this impellent and “green” demand, FenX develops new insulating foam solutions combining uniquely non-flammability and environmental friendliness. Based on a research developed at ETH Zurich, FenX exploits the ideal properties of mineral particles including mineral waste, resulting in highly porous foams that can be created through advanced processing methods, such as extrusion or 3D printing. With this novel and protected technology, the startup aims to design and produce insulation foam products, including panels, bricks and customized parts. These products are non-flammable, highly insulating, non-toxic, recyclable and eco-friendly yielding low CO2 emissions during manufacturing.

Hemolytics (Adolphe Merkle Institute, UniFr) – Medtech
Hemolytics aims at conceiving a highly sensitive, affordable, portable and robust diagnostic tool to detect malaria parasites in human blood. To effectively eradicate malaria, a mosquito-borne infectious disease, the medical staff needs a precise diagnostic tool suitable for mass screening. Therefore, the startup developed a patented method detecting the malaria biomarker, by using it as a catalyst for chemical amplification. When this biomarker is present, a transparent liquid containing the chemical reagents turns cloudy. Recording the formation of cloudiness allows the diagnostic device to detect sub-microscopic malarial infections.

Kimata Networks (ETH Zürich) – IT, mobile app, advertising, gaming
Kimata Networks creates the ultimate platform to browse, manage and share a new kind of mini-games. Combining elements of social media and games, the startup takes the popular GIF to a new level by adding interactive play at the swipe of a finger. Enabling users to build and share interactive content on a smartphone, Kimata is building a community of users that are both players and content creators, while also developing its own interactive games for the platform.

Sevensense Robotics (ETH Zürich) – IT, robotics, mechatronics
Sevensense develops the next generation of indoor localization systems for service robots. Or customers develop automated mobile machinery which relies on accurate and reliable navigation and localization information in both controlled but also uncontrolled and dynamic environments.
