Corintis wins CHF 150,000 to disrupt cooling technology and enable the next generation of computing

29.07.2022

For decades, we have taken increasing computing power—which enables everything from machine learning to cloud computing— for granted. But as these chips become more powerful, they also produce more heat: A chip today generates about 50 times more concentrated heat than a BBQ. This number is rapidly rising, creating a challenge that isn’t adequately addressed by existing solutions. Cooling down this heat not only limits chip performance but also accounts for more than 30% of all data center electricity consumption, leaving an enormous environmental footprint. Sustainable, high-performance heat extraction is the key to satisfying our ever-increasing demand for computational power.

Corintis offers a game-changing solution to the cooling of next-generation high-performance GPUs, CPUs, and AI accelerators. It is developing silicon microfluidic cooling technologies that enable liquid coolant to flow in direct contact with the silicon chip. Extracting the heat right at the core of the problem offers a heat extraction rate ten times higher than conventional methods, and with a drastically increased energy efficiency. Corintis is currently establishing pilots with major industrial partners and will use the CHF 150,000 Venture Kick award to further accelerate the commercialization of its cooling technology.

Corintis was founded in 2022 by Dr. Remco van Erp, Sam Harrison, and Prof. Elison Matioli and builds upon decades of collective experience from EPFL and CERN.

“High-performance chips are the backbone of our digital infrastructure. Many of the global challenges that we face as a society, from climate modeling to drug discovery, constantly require more powerful chips. More effective cooling of chips is an essential ingredient to advance this infrastructure without increasing the burden on our environment. We greatly appreciate the support from Venture Kick in helping us accelerate and grow as a company,” said Remco van Erp, co-founder and CEO.
