CHF 40,000 for a supply-chain risk analytics software, a platform for alternative investments, and a technology to filter natural sunlight

25.04.2022

Correntics, Splint Invest, and Voltiris win Venture Kick's second financial and entrepreneurial support stage. Their projects develop supply-chain risk analytics software for companies to become more resilient in the face of climate change, offer access to many unserved retail customers when it comes to portfolio diversification and alternative investments, and aim at enabling the co-sharing of arable land with clean power generation while keeping the agricultural yield high.

Correntics: Navigating through emerging risks in the supply chain
The last few years have shown clearly that the globalized economy has become extremely sensitive to disruptions. Events such as natural disasters in North America or Asia, as well as the Covid-19 pandemic, are just a few examples that caused significant interruptions and additional costs for companies that rely on global value chains. In the context of climate change, many natural hazards are expected to become more likely or more severe in the future, therefore posing an increasing threat to global supply chains.
Correntics develops supply-chain risk analytics software for companies to become more resilient and less prone to interruptions in the face of climate change and other emerging risks. The team, composed of CEO Michael Gloor, Ph.D. from ETH Zurich, and CTO Gaudenz Halter, MSc from the University of Zurich, delivers their solution through a software-as-a-service (SaaS) business model. By building a web-based analytics platform with sophisticated modeling capabilities, they aim to help companies understand scientific data about climate change, natural hazards, and sustainability aspects, and translate these data into decision-useful information. The tools and models they develop will support companies to increase their resilience and will reduce the risks of severe economic interruptions. Their digital solution will also help companies to measure and manage their environmental impacts. The global supply-chain management market is currently estimated at USD 19.8bn and is expected to grow significantly over the next years, almost doubling by 2027, partially also due to additional regulatory requirements around sustainability risks in the supply chain.
They will use the funds from Venture Kick to accelerate their product development and strengthen their team. correntics.com

Splint Invest: a platform for alternatives investments
Retail investors cannot diversify their portfolios as HNWI & UHNWI. This creates inequality and puts retail investors in a situation where they face higher risks when it comes to retirement planning and financial security.
Splint Invest is a B2B2C platform, where customers can buy tokens of alternative investments. Combining smart contracts, DLT and AI, it tokenizes real-world assets effortless and fully automated. This allows the company to offer access to many unserved retail investors when it comes to portfolio diversification and alternative investments. The team is composed of CEO Aurelio Perucca; Ph.D. in Economics of the University of Basel; Head of Compliance Alex Hofmann. With their app, they offer retail investors the possibility to buy digital fractions (Splints) of alternative investments. On their secondary market, retail investors can also trade the Splints. This solves the problem of illiquidity. The app is a platform. Institutional experts can be onboarded and sell their assets directly to retail investors. Splint Invest is offering the service of tokenization and performs the due diligence for each expert and asset. The team sees a potential total addressable market of 300 million users.
They will use the Venture Kick funds to implement their go-to-market strategy and explore new marketing channels to further reduce the customer acquisition cost. splintinvest.com

Voltiris: Filtering natural sunlight to transmit it to plants and recycling the "wasted" sunlight into green electricity
Greenhouses, with high agricultural yields, will be key to feeding the 2050 global population of 10B people. Hence, their surface is expected to increase by more than 15 times by then, reaching 1,000,000 ha from 60,000 ha today. However, the 12,000 greenhouse owners worldwide have a major issue: the significant energetic needs of their greenhouse, which first, equals up to 45% (1.5MCHF for a standard 5ha greenhouse, 18BnCHF worldwide) of total operating costs of growers, and second, have a significant carbon footprint. At a country level, for example, greenhouses account for ~4% of the GHG emissions in the Netherlands.
Voltiris is a Lausanne-based startup co-founded by Jonas Roch (CTO) and Dominik Blaser (Mechanical Development Lead). It develops and markets photovoltaic modules compatible with agriculture, and more specifically with glass greenhouses. The innovative Voltiris modules, protected by 2 patents, allow a double use of agricultural land by producing electricity without reducing the yield of crops placed underneath. Indeed, these modules filter sunlight to transmit to the plants the light components (colors) necessary for their growth, the rest being used to generate electricity. Effectively, it allows greenhouse owners to transform their greenhouses into renewable power plants and hence improve their energetic independence, the viability of their operations, and the sustainability of their crops. The biggest worldwide opportunity lies in the Netherlands, with approx. 2000 greenhouse owners. There, Voltiris would generate annually CHF 1.2B in value for growers and reduce the country’s total CO2 emissions by 2%.
The Venture Kick funds will help Voltiris with the financing of pilot projects in the Netherlands and to meet partners at agriculture and technology fairs. voltiris.com
