Biosimo wins CHF 150,000 to produce and sell renewable chemicals to substitute fossil-based chemicals in global supply chains

08.06.2022

Zürich, June 8, 2022 — Biosimo is a chemical engineering startup developing and operating processes for producing bio-based bulk chemicals. Those chemicals are the base of all synthetic products, such as plastics, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, and they are derived from fossils through energy-intensive and toxic processes. Biosimo has designed an innovative process that utilizes bioethanol, producing bio acetic acid and its derivatives. Biosimo will use the CHF 150,000 Venture Kick award to scale up to pilot production of bio acetic acid and delivery of requested volumes to customers.

Biosimo’s vision is to aid the global efforts to reduce carbon emissions by eradicating the need for fossils in our product supply chain. Biosimo’s solution provides their customers in the chemical, pharmaceutical, and material industries with a direct replacement of their fossil-based resources. With Biosimo’s bio-based chemicals, everyday products, like textiles, glues, cosmetics, and medicine, can become greener without changing properties and market prices. Biosimo’s sustainability strategy and anticipated cost competitiveness will offer significant advantages over existing solutions. The global market for acetic acid is estimated at CHF 13 billion and is growing at a rate of 6.2% per year.

In the coming year, Biosimo plans to prove the scalability of the process and bring the first tons of bio acetic acid to market in 2023. In parallel, Biosimo’s team is exploring the production of acetic acid derivatives, such as ethyl acetate and cellulose acetate, both 100% bio-based chemicals. The financial support from Venture Kick will go towards preparing for the pilot phase and building the right team for the pilot phase design, construction, and operation. The pilot phase is the first scale-up which will de-risk Biosimo’s technology and provide enough product to secure the first revenue, customers, and investments for the commercial production.

The Biosimo team combines essential technical expertise with business acumen. The cofounders are Dr. Sotiria Mostrou, Chief Executive Officer, and Dr. Maximilian Moser, Chief Technology Officer.

“Venture Kick has been a fantastic journey, helping the company and the founder grow closer to our goals,” said Dr. Mostrou. “We are grateful for the financial support that accelerated our path to market.

Dr. Moser added, “For us, it was much more than the financial support; Venture Kick provided structure, education, resources and connections. The program truly ‘kicked’ us in the right direction and got us closer to commercializing sustainable chemicals.”
