Amin Shokrollahi's scientific work has been on a variety of topics, including coding theory, computational number theory and algebra, and computational/algebraic complexity theory, where he has over 100 publications, including several books. He is best known for his work on iterative decoding algorithms of graph based codes, an area in which he holds 50+ granted and pending patents. He is the co-inventor of Tornado codes, and the inventor of Raptor codes. His codes have been standardized by 10+ standard bodies specializing in mobile broadcasting, and they have been successfully deployed in wireless systems, IPTV, satellite systems, and wired data transmission networks.

Amin is a professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at EPFL. Prior to joining EPFL, Amin was the chief scientist of Digital Fountain, a company specializing in transmission of data over unreliable networks. This company was acquired by Qualcomm in 2009. Prior to Digital Fountain, he was member of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories. In addition he has held positions of a senior researcher at the International Computer Science Insitute in Berkeley, and assistant professor at the department of computer science of the university of Bonn. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, and he was awarded the Best Paper Award of the IEEE IT Society in 2002 for his work on iterative decoding of LDPC code, the IEEE Eric Sumner Award in 2007 for the development of Fountain Codes, and the joint Communication Society/Information Theory Society best paper award of 2007 for his paper on Raptor Codes. He is also the recipient of the prestigious Advanced Research Grant of the European Research Council (ERC).

In 2011, Amin co-founded Kandou Bus. The company specializes in the design of high speed, energy and pin efficient serial links.
